my name is Michelle Hillestad, and I’m a traditional herbalist with clinical training.

My vision and livelihood revolve around inspiring others to connect with Nature and their bodies’ innate self-healing processes. I believe this can be done with a sense of joy, opulence, beauty, and communion with the wild world.

My herbalism path began with a geeky teenaged obsession with Medieval mystic herbalist Hildegard von Bingen, and began to bear fruit as I supported my health and special-needs baby during pregnancy and early childhood using gentle herbs. The study and practice of Herbalism are my all-consuming passion.

I’ve received my herbal education through master herbalists Matthew Wood, Phyllis D. Light, Sean Padraig O’Donoghue, at the Wood Institute of Herbalism, and the Bach Institute. I am currently on the clinical accreditation track with the American Herbalists Guild (AHG.)

ABOUT TULAROSA

Tularosa is named after the town in New Mexico where my grandmother lived- a place of many roses, and earthen houses.

Tularosa is all about the deep slow-down, creating simple daily rituals, experiencing healing through beautifully employing all 5 senses. It’s about artisan crafted, small-batch, woman-owned, and rebelliously independent. It’s about crafting these formulas with deep intention, usually under a full or new moon, often on an equinox or solstice. It’s about re-communing with the Wild and Sacred.

The plants I choose to work with in my formulations are icons of traditional herbalism, many used for centuries in the old world European tradition which is the foundation of my practice, and in other parts of the world.

They are safe, they are revered remedies, and they are effective. There are numerous scientific studies to back up what herbalists have known for ages, but I believe empirical evidence, experience, and matching people with the right plants for their personal essence and energetics speak as loudly as the Science.
